Piriform Releases Updated CCleaner V5.46 with a ‘Smart Cleaning’ option

A new version 5.46 of CCleaner has been released by Piriform. The previous version has been revised with regards to the telemetry settings. A press release sent to Gunter Born had this information.

Background of the Issue

The CCleaner version 5.45 had been released by Security vendor AVAST, developed by Piriform that was acquired in 2017, and improved it considerably in telemetry data acquisition. This led to a great outcry in the user community and users were not really enthusiastic about this upgrade. At the start of August 2018, Piriform categorically decided to entirely withdraw version 5.45 of the CCleaner.

Fix in the CCleaner V5.46

After a complete revision of the previous version, the CCleaner that has now been released in version 5.46 is an improved one. In the press release received by Born, it was written:

Piriform Software Ltd. brings with V 5.46 a revised version of CCleaner on the market. The software cleans and optimizes computers worldwide and runs PCs at peak performance. In the now released version especially the data settings have been revised.

To this end, Piriform has released a new leaflet to help CCleaner users better understand how the software works and privacy options, and what data is being transmitted and why it is needed. The CCleaner product collects anonymous data without personal information for statistical analysis.

The current release separates the delivery of anonymous usage data introduced in version 5.45 from the monitoring feature controlled by the Active Monitoring checkbox. Now, in the form of a ‘privacy’ tab, a separate control for the reporting of anonymous data has been introduced, which users can switch off at any time.

In the current version, the monitoring feature, which monitors the junk level of a device to trigger automatic cleaning and notifications from the user, was renamed “Smart Cleaning.” The Smart Cleaning options are now more focused, making it easier for the user to choose between the options available.

If the user deactivates Smart Cleaning, CCleaner shuts down the background processes of CCleaner, that is, even if the program is closed and restarted. Only with a renewed activation by the user these functions can be started again.

Ccleaner remains a vastly downloaded software with more than two billion downloads worldwide and has a large user base with almost eight million active users. Installed more than twenty-three million times a month, it seems to have a mature performance for anti-virus software.

Fortnite v5.40 Introduces Storm Structure Damage, Vaults Revolver

Epic Games shared their developer blog in video form today in which they discussed upcoming changes and additions to Fortnite battle royale. The video highlighted gameplay and balance changes that will be introduced to the game in patch v5.40. Some of the changes include the addition of storm structure damage, the removal of the revolver, and the changing of item stack sizes.

Storm Structure Damage

The most major change made to the Fortnite storm yet, the storm will now do damage to structures late game. More specifically, the final phases of the storm will deal damage to player built structures. Eric Williamson of Epic Games states they want to “provide a little more dynamic gameplay.”

Revolver Vaulting

As part of update 5.40, the revolver will no longer be available in Fortnite battle royale. The developers say that they want to keep the item pool “fresh and dynamic,” and that the weapon may return in the future. In the past, several weapons such as the crossbow and guided missile have been vaulted, and Epic says that more items will be vaulted in season six.

Stack Size Adjustments

In patch 5.40, stack sizes and drop rates of items will be increased. The Boogie Bomb will drop in stacks of two, up to a maximum stack of four. The big shield potions can now be stacked up to a maximum of three. This change will greatly impact late game decision making, as previously small shield potions were prioritized over big shield potions.

After being on the receiving end of numerous nerfs, the remote explosive has another change coming its way. In order to “match its effectiveness”, the remote explosive rarity will be increased from rare to epic. Epic also teased a “mobility item” that is part of the upcoming update.

A release date for update 5.40 has not yet been announced, but we can expect more information regarding the topic very soon.

Apache Struts 2.3.25 and 2.5.17 resolve Cryptojacking Exploit Vulnerability

Information regarding a severe vulnerability found in Apache Struts was revealed last week. A proof of concept of the vulnerability was also published publicly along with the vulnerability’s details. Since then, it seems that malicious attackers have set out to repeatedly exploit the vulnerability to remotely install a cryptocurrency mining software on users’ devices and steal cryptocurrency through the exploit. The vulnerability has been allotted the CVE identification label CVE-2018-11776.

This behavior was first spotted by the security and data protection IT company, Volexity, and since its discovery, the rate of exploits has been increasing rapidly, drawing attention to the critical severity of the Apache Struts vulnerability. The company released the following statement on the issue: “Volexity has observed at least one threat actor attempting to exploit CVE-2018-11776 en masse in order to install the CNRig cryptocurrency miner. The initial observed scanning originated from the Russian and French IP addresses 95.161.225.94 and 167.114.171.27.”

With such high profile web application platforms and services such as Apache Struts, immediate reaction to vulnerabilities discovered as well as sufficient and effective patching of concerns is of the essence. When the vulnerability was initially discovered last week, users who brought it forward with proofs of concept on many different platforms urged the administrators of their respective platforms as well as the product’s vendor to take immediate action to protect users’ data and services. Notable data theft incidents have occurred in the past which have been exploitable due to untimely patching and update.

The Apache Software Foundation has asked users to update their Struts to versions 2.3.35 for the 2.3.x series and 2.5.17 for the 2.5.x series, respectively, to mitigate the risks posed by this vulnerability. Both updates are available on the firm’s website. The major internal changes made to both updates include the mitigation of a possible remote code execution lending itself to exploit due to no namespace, no wildcard, and no value URL issues. In addition to this, the updates are said to bring “critical overall proactive security improvements” as well.

Windows Task Scheduler Micropatch Released by 0patch

Earlier this week, a user on Twitter who goes by the username SandboxEscaper posted on the social media platform’s feed with information regarding a zero-day local privilege escalation vulnerability plaguing Microsoft’s Windows operating system. The user, SandboxEscaper, also included a proof of concept along with his post which was linked through to via a GitHub website reference containing the proof of concept in detail.

According to the information that the user posted, the local privilege escalation vulnerability exists in the Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC) interface that Microsoft Windows’ Task Scheduler uses. Exploiting this vulnerability can grant a malicious attacker the right to obtain local user privileges of the system on the device exploited.

Continuing the user’s tweet, it seems that there is no vendor released work around for this vulnerability as of yet. It also seems that despite the vulnerability’s discussion on Twitter by SandboxEscaper and its validation by other security researchers such as Kevin Beaumont, the vulnerability has not been officially resolved by the vendor and it has not even received a CVE identification label as of yet for further investigation and public information release. Despite the fact that it hasn’t been processed in the CVE domain, the vulnerability has been ranked on the CVSS 3.0 scale to be of medium risk demanding quick attention.

Although Microsoft has not released any fix, official update, or advisory concerning the issue as of yet, a spokesperson from Microsoft has confirmed that the company is aware of the vulnerability, adding that Microsoft will “proactively update impacted advices as soon as possible.” Given Microsoft’s track record in providing quick and smart fixes for risky vulnerabilities, we can expect an update very soon.

0patch, however, has released a micropatch for the vulnerability in the meanwhile that affected users can implement if need be. The micropatch works on fully updated 64bit Windows 10 version 1803 and 64bit Windows Server 2016. To attain this micropatch, you must download and run the 0patch Agent installer, sign up for the sevice with an account and then download available micropatch updates according to the needs of your system. The download page contains this latest Task Scheduler vulnerability micropatch as well. 0patch warns that the micropatch is a temporary fix and the official release from Microsoft should be sought as a permanent solution to the vulnerability.

Surprisingly, SandboxEscaper disappeared off of Twitter entirely with his account disappearing from the mainstream feeds soon after the information regarding the zero-day Windows exploit was posted. It seems that the user is now back on Twitter  (or is fluctuating off and on the social media site), but no new information has been shared on the issue.

Amazon Alexa Security Risk Allows Hackers to Take Over Voice Commands, Steal Private Information

The world is changing and in the modern era, we are becoming reliant on our Internet of Things devices by the day. But this reliances could cost us everything, it could allow someone to steal our identity, bank information, medical history, and what not.

Amazon Alexa has been criticised for having a number of security flaws but Amazon has been quick to deal with them. However, this new security flaw may not have a fix at all. And this could be the most dangerous security threat yet.

According to research conducted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Amazon Alexa’s idiosyncrasies can be exploited through voice-commands to route users to malicious websites. Hackers are targeting the loopholes in machine learning algorithms to access private information.

A method called “Skill squatting” is created by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign researchers and is a successful method to trick Amazon Alexa into routing users to malicious platforms using voice commands on Amazon Echo devices.

Many users frequently mispronounce words which often results in interpretations errors by Alexa, the speech engine powering Amazon Echo. Researchers used 11,460 speech samples from the English language words spoken by Americans.

They then studied where Alexa misinterpreted voice commands, how often it does it, and why. They were able to find that certain misinterpretations occur regularly.

So using “Skill squatting,” a hacker can use these systematic errors to route Amazon Echo users to malicious applications, websites, and risk their private information. The method can be used to target certain demographics, especially, those who aren’t fluent in English.

In a variant of the attack we call spear skill squatting, we further demonstrate that this attack can be targeted at specific demographic groups. We conclude with a discussion of the security implications of speech interpretation errors, countermeasures, and future work.

The issue may not be an easy fix as it depends on the very machine learning principles Alexa and other AI machines are built on. Amazon claims it has measures in place to counter this issue but University of Illinois research says otherwise.

They claim that this won’t be an easy fix and would bring serious issues in the future.

Intel Whiskey Lake Mobile CPUs Come With Hardware Fix For Meltdown and Foreshadow

Meltdown and Foreshadow have plagued Intel CPUs and in order to fix these issues, patches were released that do fix the issue but reduce the performance of these chips and also may open doors to other vulnerabilities as well. The new Intel Whiskey Lake mobile CPUs have just been announced and these come with hardware fixes for Meltdown and Foreshadow.

Intel seemed to not have mentioned this at the announcement but later on, an Intel representative was asked about the matter and it was indeed confirmed. It is worth noting that the first wave of hardware-based fixes are limited and that while Meltdown and Foreshadow have been taken care of in the silicon, upcoming threats will have to be dealt with using software and microcode, but this is a step in the right direction.

Intel did promise us a CPU that is not affected by these vulnerabilities and a hardware fix for these issues before the end of the year, so there is hope that the upcoming desktop CPUs will have things sorted out way better than the mobile versions. The new Intel Whiskey Lake mobile CPUs come with up to 4 cores and 8 threads. The top of the line model is able to boost to 4.6 GHz. But we need to see whether that is true for selected cores or all cores.

The Intel Whiskey Lake i7-8565U has a boost clock of  4.6 GHz which means that it is 400 MHz faster than the previous model. The Intel Whiskey Lake Core i5-8265U is 500 MHz faster than the Core i5-8350U. So you are getting boosts in clock speeds with the new architecture and the chips do have a 15W TDP but keeping in mind that these chips are based on the same old 14nm process, you should not be too hyped about the performance that these chips will have to offer as compared to the previous generation processors.

You can expect to see plenty of multi-threaded performance and while you won’t be able to get lightning fast render times, you will be able to multi-task pretty well on the move. I am sure that this is something that users will appreciate. For more information regarding Intel Whiskey Lake, stay tuned.

Google Play Store Game Demos Rolling Out Through “AppOnboard” Tech

One of the most requested Play Store features is finally being rolled out to hundreds of Play Store Apps. Thanks to “AppOnboard” technology, users will now be able to try the game without having to install them first.

The instant app feature was available to Android users for a while but with Google try now, the company is taking things a step further. The try now button will now be available right next to the Install or Buy buttons for Play Store games.

So what happens when you hit the button? Hitting the button will kick-start a demo for the game that needs no installation. The demo will be up to 10MB in size and requests users to download or purchase the full game once the demo is over.

The tech behind this feature is created by mobile company AppOnBoard. Currently, it is available in Cookie Jam Blast, Looney Tunes World of Mayhem, and many more.

AppOnBaord’s tech follows Google Play Instant that was announced at the Game Developer’s Conference back in March. Google Play Instant also aimed to provide seamless demo experience but currently, AppOnBoard’s tech is being used on the Play Store.

Publishers and developers will gather data from this tool. User behavior will be studied to make improvements to the products. Previously, demos needed to be download and they often were full games that unlocked upon purchase. A seamless, quick solution was needed and AppOnBoard’s engine does exactly that.

This also means that more games could follow the paid route rather than freemium. AppOnBoard can be used for 30-days for free by game creators. Details of a subscription model or fully paid purchase details are yet to be shared by AppOnBoard.

Bad News for App Install Economy

There is bad news for $7.6 billion app install economy. If Google’s Try Now button succeeds, it can potentially undercut the app install ads. The United States spent billions last year on app install ads.

The idea was to promote apps on Facebook, Google, Instagram, and other platforms so that viewers would click through to download the apps.

But if users are able to try a demo inside the play store without downloading anything, it gives fewer reasons to developers to spend money on ads that push viewers to download.

Google Assistant Goes Bilingual, Several Indian Languages Coming Soon

Google is making sure every news that comes out of IFA 2018 is bang on. It has already announced integrations for many gadgets and now, we have news regarding Google Assistant.

According to the latest from the company, Google Assistant is now bilingual. The highly requested feature finally made it and the best part is, it automatically recognizes the language; meaning you do not have to every time select a language before asking Google Assistant a question.

However, it doesn’t support more than two languages at the time. You would need to pre-select two languages you want it to recognize.

Google Assistant Support Languages

  • English
  • German
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • Japanese

Google plans on “expanding to more languages in the coming months.” The tech behind this amazing feature is pretty interesting, as explained by Google.

In 2013, Google started working on spoken language identification (LangID) technology using deep neural networks [4][5]. Today, our state-of-the-art LangID models can distinguish between pairs of languages in over 2000 alternative language pairs using recurrent neural networks, a family of neural networks which are particularly successful for sequence modeling problems, such as those in speech recognition, voice detection, speaker recognition and others. One of the challenges we ran into was working with larger sets of audio — getting models that can automatically understand multiple languages at scale, and hitting a quality standard that allowed those models to work properly.

Going Global With Google Assistant Support

Google is not only focusing on western languages but also on South East Asia. Algorithms are under development that allow Google Assistant to support seven Indian languages soon. During the recent “Google for India” event the company announced the arrival of Marathi. Meanwhile, other languages are in the pipeline – Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Kannada, Urdu and Malayalam.

In addition to supporting multiple languages, the assistant will use machine learning to enhance user experience. Currently, only English and Hindi are supported in South East Asia. An update in the coming months will add more regional languages.

Fix: Dishonored 2 Crashing

Dishonored 2 is a sequel to a popular game published by Bethesda and it was widely popular because of the fact that it combines first-person experience with stealth and action and it’s up to the player to choose his style of fighting.

However, plenty of PC users had issues with launching and actually getting the game to run properly as it often crashes immediately on startup. We have gathered some working solutions and we hope you’ll be able to get the game to run after performing these methods one by one.

What Causes the Crashes?

Dishonored 2 crashes are often caused by outdated graphics card drivers which don’t support new technologies used by such games. Also, users who have overclocked their GPUs also started to experience Dishonored 2 crashes. Some programs who use overlay to display their windows with the game launched in full-screen are also some of the common culprits, among other things

Solution 1: Stop Overclocking Your Processors

Overclocking is a processor process where users change the maximum frequency of the graphics of central processor to a value which is above the recommended one set by your manufacturer. This can give your PC a significant performance and speed advantage and improve it in all ways but you have to absolutely careful since there were instances where entire rigs broke down and even ended up in smoke.

Some CPUs and GPUs were definitely not made to be overclocked and it’s a fact that some models perform way better than others. What’s even more important is that different tools used to overclock your processors (CPU or GPU) work better or worse depending on the processor which is being used.

Returning your processor’s frequency to its original state depends on which software you used to overclock it in the first place. Intel and AMD have their own applications available to download which let users overclock their CPUs but they sometimes implement factory overclock settings which are activated when, for example, running Dishonored 2. Stop overlocking and check to see if the issue persists.

Solution 2: Use Your Monitor’s Native Resolution

Simply changing the in-game resolution settings to your monitor’s native resolution has managed to solve the problem for several users and it’s definitely one of the easiest fixes you can try out.

The only downside of this method is that there might have been a reason for setting the resolution lower than your computer’s original one. If the game can only be run via minimum settings on your computer, the game may run slower and with less FPS if you increase the resolution setting greatly. You may need to tone down other graphical settings.

  1. First of all, you should find out your computer’s resolution settings. You can do so by right-clicking the Desktop and choosing the Display Settings option or Screen Resolution if you are using a version of Windows older than Windows 10.
  2. The following window which will appear differs from Windows 10 and older versions.

  1. If you are using Windows 10, the Settings app should open immediately so try scrolling down until you reach the Resolution section. Click the resolution to open the menu and remember the option next to which you can see the “Recommended” text if the recommended resolution is used. Choose the one which is currently used.
  2. If you are using an older version of Windows, the window below will appear. Next to the Resolution text, you should see a similar resolution button. Your PC should be set to the highest settings which is also the recommended one. Take note of the resolution you are using.

  1. Open the game by double-clicking its icon on the desktop, by searching for it in the Start menu, or by launching it through Steam.
  2. From the Home screen which will open up, click on Options and navigate to the Graphics tab above by clicking on it and locate the Screen Resolution option. Change the resolution to the one your computer is using and accept the changes. Check to see if the game still crashes.

Solution 3: Uninstall MSI Afterburner

MSI Afterburner is a tool used to overclock your GPU. Even if you have tried out the Solution 1 and it has shown no improvement, you might want to uninstall this program completely. Even if you are not currently overclocking your device, you should uninstall this program in particular because of its screen overlays.

  1. First of all, make sure you have logged in with an admin account as you won’t be able to uninstall programs using any other account privileges.
  2. Make sure you have stopped overclocking your GPU or CPU before you initiate the uninstalling process on your computer.
  3. Click on the Start menu and open Control Panel by searching for it. Alternatively, you can click on the gear icon in order to open the Settings app if you are using Windows 10.
  4. In Control Panel, select to View as: Category at the top right corner and click on Uninstall a Program under the Programs section.

  1. If you are using the Settings app, clicking on Apps should immediately open a list of all installed programs on your PC.
  2. Locate the MSI Afterburner entry on the list and click on it once. Click on the Uninstall button above the list and confirm any dialog boxes which may appear. Follow the instructions on-screen in order to uninstall MSI Afterburner and restart your computer afterwards.

Solution 4: Disable Steam Overlay

Steam Overlay is a known culprit for this problem because of the fact that it interacts with your game in full-screen and it can cause instant crashes. Even though this is a respectable Steam feature, you probably won’t need it for this game as its often use to chat with your friends and this is not an online game. You can disable it just for this specific game.

Note: Obviously, this method can only be applied to users who have purchased and downloaded the game via Steam.

  1. Open up Steam by double-clicking its entry on the Desktop or by searching for it in the Start menu area or the search bar to the right.

  1. Navigate to the Library tab in the Steam window, and locate Dishonored 2 in the list of the games you own in your library.
  2. Right-click on Dishonored 2 from library and choose the Properties option from the context menu which will appear. Stay in the General tab in the Properties window and clear the box next to the “Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game” entry.

  1. Apply the changes, exit, and try launching the game. Check to see if the issue still appears while playing the game.

Solution 5: Update or Roll Back Your Driver

If the game has been crashing for a while, especially since you have first installed it, you might want to blame it on the game’s video drivers as new games often require the latest Windows updates as well as the latest graphics card drivers in order to run properly. It’s also recommended if you have just updated the game and it used to work properly.

The other scenario is the one in which the crashes start to occur just after a driver update and that can be blamed directly on the new drivers which aren’t well optimized for the game or they use technologies not accepted by the game. Either way, the problem becomes easy to solve if you follow the steps below.

Updating the Driver:

  1. Click on the Start menu, type in “Device Manager” with Start menu open, and select it from the list of results by simply clicking on the first one. You can also use the Windows Key + R key combo in order to bring up the Run dialog box. Type in “devmgmt.msc” in the box and click OK in order to run it.

  1. Since it’s the video card driver you want to update on your computer, expand the Display adapters section, right click on your graphics card and select the Uninstall Device option.

  1. Confirm any dialogues which may ask you to confirm the uninstallation of the current graphics device driver and wait for the process to finish.
  2. Look for your graphics card driver on the card’s manufacturer’s website and follow their instructions which should be available on the site. Save the installation file on your computer and run it from there. Your computer may restart several times during the installation.
  3. You should also gather some basic information about your computer in order to download the proper driver. Try running Dishonored 2 again and check to see if the crash still occurs.

Nvidia Drivers — Click Here!

AMD Drivers — Click Here!

Note: If you like to keep your OS updated (and you should), latest drivers are often installed with Windows updates so make sure you keep your computer’s operating system up to date at all times. Windows Update is run automatically on Windows 10 by default and it’s quite difficult to turn it off manually but you can check if there are new updates by following the instructions we prepared below.

  1. Search for “Settings” by using the search bar located at the taskbar or click the gear key which will appear after clicking the Start menu button.
  2. Locate and open the “Update & security” section in the Settings app. Stay in the Windows Update tab and click the Check for updates button under the Update status part of the window in order to check whether there is a new version of Windows available.

  1. If there is one, Windows should start the download process automatically. Please be patient for the update to install and check to see if Skype is now working properly.

If you are using any other version, of Windows, use the steps below in order to update your PC since this method works for all versions of Windows:

  1. Open the PowerShell utility by right-clicking the Start menu button and clicking on the Windows PowerShell (Admin) option at the context menu.

  1. If you see Command Prompt instead of PowerShell at that spot, you can also search for it in the Start menu or the search bar next to it. This time, make sure you right-click on the first result and choose Run as administrator.
  2. In the Powershell console, type in “cmd” and stay patient for Powershell to switch to the cmd-like window which might appear more natural to Command Prompt users.
  3. In the “cmd”-like console, type in the command shown below and make sure you click Enter afterwards:

wuauclt.exe /updatenow

  1. Let this command do its thing for at least an hour and check back to see if any updates were found and installed without issues.

Rolling Back the Driver:

  1. Right click on the graphics card driver you want to roll back and select Properties. After the Properties window opens, navigate to the Driver tab and locate the Roll Back Driver button at the bottom.

  1. If the option is grayed out, it means that the device wasn’t updated in the near future as it has no backup files recalling the old driver. This also means that the recent driver update is probably not the cause of your problem.
  2. If the option is available to click on, click on it and follow the instructions on-screen to proceed with the process. Restart the computer and check to see if the problem still occurs when running Dishonored 2.

Solution 6: Change Your RAM Frequency

If you have ever changed RAM frequency while overclocking or if you have installed new RAM on your computer, you might want to check out this solution. Furthermore, even if you haven’t touched anything, setting your RAM to operate on a lower frequency might help you solve this problem if you have the patience to follow through these steps as they include plenty of BIOS changes which can be dangerous if not executed correctly.

First of all, you will need to enter BIOS and enable XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles). Note that this can’t be done in all BIOS settings but it’s available for the vast majority of computers. It’s not always located in the same spot, though.

  1. Restart your computer by going to the Start Menu >> Power Button >> Restart.
  2. Try to enter BIOS settings on your computer by pressing the BIOS setup key while the system boots.
  3. The BIOS key is typically displayed on the boot screen, saying “Press ___ to enter Setup.” There are other ways in which you may see the message but it will be quite self-explanatory. Common BIOS keys are F1, F2, Del, Esc and F10 so make sure you click it fast enough or you will have to restart your computer again.

  1. The XMP Profile option which you will need to change is located under various tabs in the BIOS tools on different computers made by difference manufacturers and these is no rule to where the setting should be located.
  2. It’s usually located under the Advanced, M.I.T >> Advanced Frequency Settings, or various Tweaker or Overclock tabs which may be available. No matter where it is, the name of the option is XMP Profile.
  3. Once you locate the correct option, change it to Enabled.

  1. The second options you should tweak is called DRAM Frequency. This option is also located in different places under various configurations but it’s often in the same area as the XMP profile setting.
  2. Wherever you locate this option after browsing for a while, you should select it and change it to a lower setting but make sure you don’t make any drastic changes. For example, if RAM was running at 4133MHz, you should change it to 4000MHz.

  1. Navigate to the Exit section and choose to Exit Saving Changes. This will proceed with the boot. Make sure you try see if the Dishonored 2 game is running properly now.

How to Enable Windows Timeline

Microsoft has introduced a new feature called Timeline in Windows 10 after rolling out the latest update. It is designed in a way so users can switch between platforms such as Android and iOS phones. It includes an overview of currently recent applications across your machine and gives you a detailed insight of all the items you were working on. This may extend to continuity in Windows applications in Android and iOS applications on other platforms.

Lately, however, many users have reported that they cannot see the timeline on their computer. It either seems to be disabled or doesn’t show complete information in its interface. By default, Windows doesn’t support third-party applications in its timeline feature. This feature is currently still under development and because it isn’t a complete product yet, you might see little use for it.

How to enable Windows Timeline

In this article, we will go through how you can enable Windows Timeline on your computer. Users facing the problem where their timeline is missing from their computer will also be addressed in this short tutorial. We will also try to give you a little insight on how to use Windows timeline.

Enabling Timeline in Windows 10

By default, the timeline feature will automatically gets enabled when the Windows update is installed. You don’t have to do anything. Just press Windows + Tab button to view your timeline sorted according to the date. You can scroll down to see more entries.

However, if you have disabled the activity tracking of your applications, you will not be able to see the complete information accessible on your timeline. You can easily change these using Settings. If these options are disabled, it might be the reason why your timeline isn’t enabled.

  1. Press Windows + S, type “settings” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  2. Once in Settings, click on the option of Privacy.

  1. Click on Activity history using the left navigation pane and check the following options:
  • Let Windows collect activity from this PC
  • Let Windows sync my activities from this PC to the Cloud
  • Show activities from accounts

  1. Once you have made the changes, restart your computer properly, make sure you have an active internet connection and try pressing Windows + Tab

Note: Timeline will not appear on your screen if you have not updated your Windows to the latest build. This is a feature which is only available in the new update.

How to Host Another Twitch Channel on Your Stream

The return on investment your Twitch channel yields – in terms of both fame and fortune – depends heavily on the amount and quality of the content you are providing to your viewers. The more content your viewers get, the more you will engage them and the more successful a streamer you will be. That being the case, there is nothing worse for a Twitch streamer’s progress in gaining a following and a respectable return on what they invest in their channel than an idle stream. While your stream is offline, you are not providing any content to your viewers and are, therefore, not engaging them. That being so, it is imperative that a Twitch streamer provides content to their audience even when their own stream is offline.

Hosting another Twitch channel is the most effective and popular method streamers use to provide their viewers with content even when they are not broadcasting their own streams. Hosting a Twitch channel on your stream basically refers to broadcasting another channel’s live stream on your own Twitch channel while your own stream is offline. Hosting another Twitch channel on your stream kills two birds with one stone – doing so helps promote other Twitch users and their streams, which holds a lot of significance in the peer-to-peer community that Twitch is (we streamers gotta stick together, you know?), while making sure that your viewers get their fill of engaging content even when you aren’t streaming.

Hosting another Twitch channel on your own stream helps develop relationships with other streamers which can be mutually beneficial and since you have a significant amount of control over what content you host on your stream, your viewers get their fix of content when you’re out of reach. Hosting another user’s stream is a completely optional endeavor and is not at all a prerequisite to being an active member of the Twitch community, but it is a tactic employed by the majority of successful Twitch streamers.

How to host another Twitch channel on your stream

If you have no idea how you can go about hosting another Twitch user on your own stream, fear not – the process is pretty simple. In addition, there are three different ways you can go about hosting another Twitch user and the content they broadcast on your own stream:

Hosting another channel via Twitch chat

The simplest way to start hosting another user on your own stream is using your channel’s Twitch chat. To do so, while your own stream is offline, simply type /host followed by the username of whatever Twitch channel you want to host on your stream into your channel’s chat, and press Enter. For example, if you want to host the official PAX Twitch channel’s stream on your channel, you’d type /host pax into your channel’s chat and press Enter. If you’re hosting channels on your stream via Twitch chat, you can change the channel being hosted up to three times every half hour, and hosting via chat can be disabled by typing /unhost into your channel’s chat and pressing Enter.

Hosting other channels via the Twitch mobile app

You can also start hosting other Twitch users’ streams on your own channel while your stream is offline using the Twitch mobile app for Android and iOS devices. To do so, on a device which has you logged into the Twitch app:

  1. Navigate to the channel you want to host.
  2. Tap on the gear icon.
  3. Tap on Host in the dropdown menu that you see.

Hosting channels on your stream using Auto Host

The most commonly opted for choice when it comes to hosting other users’ Twitch streams is using Twitch’s Auto Host feature. When you use Auto Host, you can set up a list of channels (preferably ones that broadcast content that is similar to what you broadcast and which would be appropriate and engaging to your audience) from which Twitch will automatically select one and begin hosting as soon as your Stream goes offline. Auto Host can be configured to select a channel to host either randomly or based on the order you created the list. To enable and configure Twitch’s Auto Host feature, you need to:

  1. Make your way to the Twitch website.
  2. Click on your username in the top-right corner of your screen.
  3. Click on Dashboard in the resulting dropdown menu.
  4. In the left pane, scroll down to the Settings section and click on Channel.
  5. Scroll down to the Auto Hosting section.
  6. Enable the Auto host channels option.
  7. Use the other options provided in this section to configure the Auto Host feature however you like.
  8. Click on Host List.
  9. Add whatever channels you want hosted on your stream while it is offline to this list.

The pros and cons of hosting other Twitch streams on your channel

As much as streamers would like to deny or sugarcoat it, the fact remains that streaming is a business venture. Like all other business ventures, streaming is a balance sheet of assets and liabilities, profit and loss, pros and cons – streamers don’t do anything unless they can see it benefiting them and their stream. Hosting other Twitch streams on your channel comes with its own pros and cons.

The pros

  • Hosting channels on your stream means that your stream isn’t idle even when you’re offline and that you are constantly providing your users with content for them to munch on.
  • When you host other channels on your stream, you give your viewers an insight into the kind of content that you like to watch and the streamers that you follow and respect. This helps your viewers get to know you better, which is quite valuable for any streamer.
  • Hosting channels on your stream offers an opportunity to profit that is devoid of any risk or investment – your stream is offline anyway, so there’s a lot to be gained here and virtually nothing to be lost.
  • To a significant extent, hosting another channel will award you with free promotion on the hosted channel. While the exact amount of free publicity you are going to be rewarded with depends heavily on whether the hosted stream displays the names of hosts on center stage and whether the hosted streamer is gracious enough to mention hosts on stream, names of a Twitch channel’s hosts do appear along with a special message in the channel’s chat.
  • Hosting another channel on their stream and directing their viewers to go check out and follow the hosted channel is one of the most common ways streamers bring their streams to a close. In a practice that has been dubbed “raiding”, streamers end their streams by manually starting to host another channel on their stream and encouraging all of their viewers to go check out the channel being hosted and even follow them. This practice is greatly beneficial for all streamers who take part in the practice of hosting channels on their own streams.
  • There is a pretty decent chance that hosting another channel on your stream while it is offline will reward your channel with a bit of prime real estate in the Live Hosts category of streams on the Twitch website and mobile apps. This means more exposure, and therefore more return on investment, for you and your stream.

The cons

  • You only have control over the channels you host on your stream – not the content those channels broadcast. While you can select what channels are hosted on your stream, you can’t select channels to host based on games they broadcast or subject. This means that if the hosted user decides to stream content that would be of no interest to your target audience or is not appropriate for them, there’s nothing you can do about it and that will be the content provided to your viewers while your stream is offline.
  • Almost all Twitch streamers have an “away message” that is displayed to their viewers while their stream is offline. If you host another channel on your stream, the hosted channel’s stream will replace your away message, meaning that you are going to have to move any message you might have left for your viewers to see while you are offline to a different, less-prominent position on your Twitch profile.

Is hosting another channel on your stream worth it?

Many streamers wonder if hosting the streams of other Twitch users on their own channels is actually worth it. The only practice within the Twitch community that even comes close to the rewards hosting channels has to offer is VOD (Video-on-Demand). Twitch’s VOD feature records all of a streamer’s streams and stores them for 14-60 days depending on the kind of Twitch account the streamer has, and these recordings are played or their stream while they are not broadcasting. This means that your stream will still be active and churning out content even if you are not streaming, but VOD does not offer rewards in as much of an abundance as hosting, if done right, does.

Taking all of that into consideration, if you can find channels that broadcast content similar to yours in terms of both nature and quality with owners who are gracious enough and would be willing to work with you towards a mutually beneficial professional relationship, hosting other channels on your stream can definitely be worth it.

Getting other streamers to host your channel on their streams

If you’re going to host other channels on your stream, it should also work the other way around, no? Other streamers should also be hosting your channel on their streams. Here are some ways you can entice other Twitch users to host your channel on their streams while they aren’t broadcasting any content of their own:

  • Set up a visible host list on your stream by adding it to your stream layout using something like StreamLabs (a completely free suite of tools for your Twitch stream). If your viewers see that you prominently display the names of all of your hosts on your stream, they might just be tempted to host your stream on their own channel to earn a place on that foxy list of yours.
  • Get your viewers to host you. If you’re anything like basically every other Twitch streamer out there, you obviously already ask your users to follow you and subscribe to your stream. If you want streamers to host your channel, though, you should also start asking your users to host you. A large percentage of the Twitch community is highly passionate about supporting and helping out their favorite streamers, so if you inform them that hosting your channel on their streams is the best way to do so, it’s a safe bet that a lot of them would do it in a heartbeat.
  • Get your friends to host you. While complete strangers who simply watch your stream won’t really be inclined to host your stream on their own channels, you could quite easily talk your friends into doing it. And the sociable bunch that they are, streamers do make a lot of friends developing their streaming careers. All you’re asking your friends to do is host your stream on their channel while theirs is offline – what do they even have to lose, right?

LMGTFY: Everything You Need to Know About the Popular Acronym

There is no denying that the era we live in is defined solely by the World Wide Web. With the dawn of the internet era, everything of significance has shifted over to the internet, and that included pop culture. The hottest TV shows, reality shows, the latest jokes, gripes and musings, and everything TMZ-esque – the internet has become the hub for it all. Prevalent in today’s pop culture are acronyms that are used on the internet, mostly in instant messages and expressions that have a character limit. One acronym that is thrown around on the internet a lot these days is LMGTFY, and many patrons of the World Wide Web are not really familiar with it.

What Does LMGTFY Stand for?

First things first, LMGTFY is an acronym, so it must stand for something, and it does. LMGTFY stands for Let Me Google That For You. Do you now have at least a semblance of an idea as to what the acronym means and is used for? If you do, good for you!

The Meaning Behind LMGTFY and Its Purpose

LMGTFY is something you say as a response to any question that Google could have answered not only much better and more accurately but also more easily than an actual person. LMGTFY is an answer to any generic, impersonal question that some people might not really have the answer to, but Google, the hottest search engine in the world right now, most definitely will. The purpose of this acronym is to convey to the person who asked the question, in a sarcastic manner, of course, that the question is one that’s better posed to a search engine such as Google rather than a person. It is meant to imply that both the person asking the question and the question’s target would have been much better off if the question had simple been presented to Google instead.

What Context Should You Use LMGTFY in?

LMGTFY basically says that an automated search engine would have been able to answer that question much better and much quicker for you – there was no reason for you to bother an actual human being with it. Since that is the case, LMGTFY makes for a perfect response to any question that is generic and impersonal – a question that is based on and needs to be answered with facts rather than opinions or ideas and anecdotes extrapolated from personal experiences.

It is important to note that you need to know what situations warrant the use of LMGTFY and what situations the acronym simply shouldn’t be used in. LMGTFY has been designed expressly to be used in a humorous way, which means that you should also refrain from using it in any situation where there is even a slight chance that it won’t be interpreted as a tool for humor. For example, people who are not really internet savvy such as people of age or people who are not proponents of light humor on the web or are sticklers aren’t really people you should be responding to with an acronym such as LMGTFY that they might not understand or take offense to.

A Wild LMGTFY in Its Natural Habitat

For you to completely understand what LMGTFY means and how it is supposed to be used, you need to see it in action, so here’s an example. Say you’re simply going about your day, and you post a status update to your Facebook, exasperated that you’ve put on five pounds over the holidays. You’re probably going to get a good few likes and a ton of “Haha” reactions to your status, as well as a few comments, but there might also be this one person who goes, “Exactly how much is five pounds in kilograms?”. This, right here, is question that is based on universally known truths and needs to be answered with facts, and is therefore a question that Google can answer much faster and much more accurately than any human could. This is an example of the perfect situation for you to break out LMGTFY from your internet acronym arsenal and respond to whoever asked you the question with it.

LMGTFY.com

Sometimes, simply responding to someone who asked you a generic and impersonal question with LMGTFY just isn’t enough – you have to go the extra mile. This is where LMGTFY.com comes in. What LMGTFY.com does is that it creates a short animation of whatever query you want being Googled, along with instructions on exactly how a person can go about Googling a query. Talk about the level of sarcasm being over 9000, right?

Say someone asks you “How long were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie married for?” and, seeing as it is the perfect opportunity to do so, you want to respond to them with LMGTFY. To add insult to injury, you can simply:

  1. Open an internet browser of your choice.
  2. Go to LMGTFY.com.
  3. Type the question (which, in this case, is How long were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie married for?) into the Search… field.
  4. Click on Get LinkNote: To see a preview of the animation the website created for you, click on Preview.

The animation will be created and you will be presented with a link to it. The link will look something like this:

https://ift.tt/2wv6flI

When you respond to the question with LMGTFY, you can add this link to your response to add even more sarcastic weight to it. When the person who asked the question clicks on the link, they will see the query they presented be posed to Google, which is a much better recipient for the query, and exactly how they can go about doing so.

The website may not be hilarious per se, but it does hold a significant value to anyone who is familiar with the concept of sarcasm (which is basically almost all of the patrons of the World Wide Web). LMGTFY is an incredibly clever little acronym and response to generic questions that is based on an extremely prevalent yet not really evident trend – everyone Googling everything they don’t know. The existence of LMGTFY is a testament to the fact that people today rely heavily on search engines, mainly Google, to have all the answers and to know everything they don’t, and it’s kind of scary how a bunch of computers hooked up to each other do a better job of “knowing” than sentient human beings.

New iPhones and Apple Watch Name and Design Leaked

iPhone X Plus

9to5mac has got the hold of the new iPhones and Apple Watch. The publication has got the images revealing the design and naming of the upcoming iPhones and Apple Watch. According to to the leak the new iPhones are indeed called iPhone XS and iPhone XS Plus. That’s for both high-end OLED display models with expected price being $899 and $999. There is no information on the lower end LCD model in the leak. But it’s likely to follow similar hardware design with multiple color options. And is most likely to be called iPhone 9.
The leaked image shows both iPhone XS and Plus model to be in Gold color. So the rumors were indeed true.

IPHONE-XS
Not just that Apple Watch’s design also got leaked. The image of Apple Watch (below) shows a bigger screen with a more in-depth analogue watch face. It’s safe to assume that more watch faces are in order for the new display. There is an additional mic that can be seen between the Watch crown and side button. That’s probably there to help make phone calls and walkie-talkie experience better. Everybody complained about the red crown on the cellular model of Apple Watch last year. The red button seems replaced with a red ring around the crown. Definitely looks nicer compared to last year.

apple_watch_series_4_9to5mac
All this when we are hardly two weeks away from the Apple event where the company was going to unveil these new devices. While Apple’s supply chain leaks are common because of third party involvement, product marketing images like these are unheard of. The above images clearly show that they were meant for the keynote. 9to5mac haven’t detailed on how they got these images.

iOS 12 beta users are stuck with a weird pop-up bug

iPhone X

iOS 12 beta users are stuck with a weird pop up bug prompting them to install the latest version of iOS 12. But the problem is if you navigate to the update section, there is actually no update awaiting you.

iOS 12
The bug started appearing on 27th of August but in the last 24 hours, the prompt has become rather more frequent and annoying. Every time iPad or iPhone users unlock their devices, the unpleasant pop up is awaiting them. There is no way this pop-up can be disabled, the users have to manually disable the popup every time it appears.

The popup says,

“A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 12 beta.”

Apparently, some miscalculations in the time and date of iOS expiry are prompting these pop-ups. Apple will have to act swiftly and release an update so that users can get rid of this issue.

This is the reason why the beta testing programs are not for everyone. Although the beta builds are tested before being released yet there is a high chance of lack of stability and issues might arise in the software.

5 things to expect from Apple Keynote on 12th September

Apple Invite

Apple has made its keynote event official yesterday by sending the invites. The hardware focused event is to be held on Sep 12, 10AM PDT. The event will take place in Steve Jobs Theater inside Apple Park campus. Apple sent the invite with “Gather around” theme. The image depicts Apple Park design with gold color which probably means that new iPhones are getting the aforementioned color. Apple launched iPhone X last year but only in white and matte black finishes.

Apple Invite
Here is a rundown of everything you can expect from the event.

1. New iPhones

Apple is reported to have three iPhones for this year. An upgraded version of current iPhone X with same 5.8” OLED display and a lower price tag of $899. A larger iPhone X with 6.5” OLED screen that’s most likely to serve the plus model for this year. This model is likely to be priced at $999. And finally, a lower cost LCD model most probably replacing iPhone 8. It’s important to remember that we won’t be seeing any iPhones with bezels this year. The iPhone X design is what we have from this point on.

Both iPhone X and its plus variant are expected to come in black, white and gold colors. While the lower LCD model is expected to come in no less than five colors including rose gold and purple — or whatever Apple happens to call them.

2. Apple Watch Series 4

It’s not confirmed if Apple will call it series 4. But that’s what it will be called anyway. Apple Watch is expected to have more screen area this time while keeping the same overall size. That means removal of the bezels from Watch as well.

Better heart rate detection, more focus on fitness and notifications are supposed to be the key features.

3. iPad Pros

We are going to see an iPhone X design pasting on all other Apple products this year. The new iPad Pros are likely to get what iPhone X had last year. FaceID, removal of home button etc. What’s not clear is perhaps the notch. Remember, Apple reduced the bezels from iPad Pros last year to a degree where they are almost not even noticeable. So there is a chance that iPad Pros come with minor bezels as last year.

The new iPad Pros are likely to come in 11” and 13” sizes since Apple is focusing on productivity with these devices. The iPad 9.7” model and iPad Mini are likely to be ignored on the event.

4. Macs

It will be a huge surprise if Apple announces the rumored retina version of MacBook Air. Despite not getting the same treatment as MacBook Pros or the new MacBook, MacBook Air remains an important product in Apple lineup. People still love the unique design of the machine. However, with still no retina display it’s losing its charm. If Apple indeed does announce MacBook Air, it will be the talk of the event for sure. At least in the core Apple community.

Mac Mini or a pro version of it is also speculated. Mac Mini is in even worse shape than MacBook Air as of now. And is in need of a desperate update. Not just internally but also in physical form factor. It does not feel like Mini anymore. We might also see true tone finally coming to iMac. And there might be spec bump for MacBook too.

Apart from this it’s expected Apple might finally be giving us AirPower. Apple introduced the Wireless charging pad exactly a year ago but we are yet to hear when it’s going to ship it. And everyone’s favorite i.e. AirPods might be getting an update too (in black color please).

Apple previewed the new versions of iOS and Mac in WWDC earlier this year. We will be getting dates for their official release. New devices come with new OSs preloaded. Older devices are likely to get the updates in and around Sep 20th.

Donald Trump accuses Google for suppressing his voice

Google Donald Trump

There were some logistical and practical reasons for newspapers being printed after midnight. First, you want all the news of the previous day to be completely wrapped up. Second, the act of printing takes time. And third, perhaps most importantly, you need to deliver them to customers so that they read it first thing in the morning. And thus influence what they think about all day. The last point would have been the least to get the attention of a newspaper business but it was important. Look, no further than Trump’s timing for his most controversial tweets. It’s always between midnight and 5AM in the morning.

The nature of his tweets and the provocative way he writes them guarantees that what he says will be the topic of the day. And that’s what makes his recent tweets more ironic. Because he is actually complaining about not being heard enough. And that too on a platform he has used to literally win the elections and then to pretty much control what gets heard the most on any given day i.e. Twitter.

His latest target is not exactly Twitter in specific — though the company had its share in the past. It’s Google. Trump believes that Google is unfairly treating him by artificially changing the results to some Google queries.

Trump shared a video hash-tagged #StopTheBias that shows images of Google’s homepage of the day Obama and Trump gave the State of Union addresses. In his video Google’s homepage is linking to Obama’s address but not to Trump’s on respective dates. Google responded and clarified that it’s not true. It did so by providing a screenshot of their own where Trump’s address was linked the way Obama’s was.

What’s more interesting is that Trump’s video is using an old Google logo. Google changed its logo on Sep 1st, 2015. The Trump’s screenshot of supposedly 2016’s Google homepage has somehow the old logo in it.

While this allegation was specific. The recent tweets from Trump on the same issue have suggested that big tech companies are biased to suppress conservative opinion. Trump accused social media companies of promoting CNN and other liberal channels more than their counterpart conservative channels like Fox. The reality seems further from Trump’s opinions. The chances of a populist right wing to be the leader of US seem improbable without social media. It’s their existence and the giant uncensored microphone they provide that enabled Trump reach where he is today.

Almost 50% iPhone users plan to buy the new iPhone, Survey

Apple iPhone X

A recent survey conducted by Loup Ventures has revealed some interesting details about how the new iPhones will fare for the consumers. In the survey, almost 48% of iPhone owners have shown the intent to upgrade to the new iPhone models about to launch this year.

All the survey respondents were based in US.

While this figure might be encouraging for Apple we need to understand here that showing an intent and actual purchase are two different things. Hence, the figured is a bit skewed and doesn’t reflect the true picture of how many people would surely upgrade to the new iPhones.

iPhone
But the Loup Ventures maintain that this year’s iPhones are the most anticipated iPhone devices ever. Never have they witnessed this much number of people showing interest in buying an upcoming iPhone model.

The survey was also conducted on Android users, 19% of the Android users showed interest in switching to iPhone next year. This year the percentage has seen a jump from 12% of last year. Another survey on the trends of iOS and Android platform reveals that Android users mainly switch to iOS ecosystem for a better user experience.

On the other hand, Apple has sent out the invitations for the official launch event dated 12th of September. Apple is expected to launch three iPhone models, Apple Watch and an improved version of Airpods.
