Epic responds to Fortnite Summer Skirmish cheating allegations

Last week was the first of Fortnite Summer Skirmish tournaments hosted by Epic Games themselves. The tournament saw a rough launch, with matches being a laggy mess throughout the first half of the event. After the conclusion of the Saturday Skirmish, suspicion arose regarding the winner on PlayStation 4, IDropz_bodies.

Reddit user Sora26 made a detailed post on the subreddit stating that iDropz cheated his way to the top. iDropz won a $130,000 prize after winning several matches totaling for 129 eliminations in 10 games. In two back-to-back games, the suspected cheater killed more than 20 players per game. This reason, as well as the fact iDropz had not streamed any of his matches live, led fans to believe that there was foul play.

Sora26’s post explains that viewers noticed that players were ‘feeding’ iDropz. “There was countless players who did not shoot at him at all. Instead, these players just ran up to him and although moved around, didn’t really attempt to shoot him at all,” says Sora. “Viewers of the stream accounted for as high as 10 of these ultra no shooting back players during both of iDropz 20+ kill games.”

Epic’s Response

Earlier today, Epic responded to the controversy via a Reddit post. According to the post, Epic conducted an investigation in which they analyzed iDropz. The company states that all of iDropz’s 129 eliminations throughout the Skirmish were on different players. “This is not indicative of him having been intentionally fed eliminations and/or collusion with other players.”

Regarding live streaming, Epic said, “iDroPz_BoDiEs was unable to stream the event due to a Summer Skirmish rules requirement of a 2-minute stream delay for participants who wish to broadcast.” As stream delays cannot be set on console capture softwares, the contestant broadcasted match replays after the event.

Epic stated that they have no evidence if the player used a mouse and keyboard to play out his matches. Regardless, Epic “do not restrict input device for players on our platforms in an effort to promote accessibility for our entire audience.”

The posted ended with a note saying that “unsportsmanlike conduct from participants” will not be tolerated. Epic will not take any action against the cheater without any hard evidence, as they do not want to tear apart their proud moment.
