First Preview of Microsoft Hyper-V Server Included in Windows Server 2019 Insider Preview Build 17709
Microsoft just announced and released the Windows Server 2019 Insider Preview Build 17709 via the Windows Blog. The first preview of the Microsoft Hyper-V Server is included in this Preview Build.
This release is in the Windows Server vNext Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC). It includes the Desktop Experience and Server Core and it supports all 18 server languages. Microsoft stated that in-place OS upgrades are “supported from Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016 or a previous preview build.”
Besides the inclusion of the Microsoft Hyper-V Server preview, there were several other updates they focused on. They have included an exhaustive list of updates here. The following are the updates that Microsoft highlighted for the update.
Group Managed Service Accounts Improvements
The scalability and reliability of containers have been improved for group managed service accounts (gMSA) accessing network resources. Users should receive fewer authentication errors when using a single gMSA with multiple container instances. They also included “You no longer need to set the container’s host name to be the same as the gMSA. We also fixed a bug that prevented you from using gMSAs with Hyper-V isolated containers.”
New Base Image
A new base image has been added to the Windows Server container collection. The Windows image will be joining the NanoServer and WindowsServerCore container images. The new image will contain more components than the original containers. Microsoft said that this “means it can support applications that have additional API dependencies.”

A series of known issues were listed on the official blog post. As this is a pre-release software, Microsoft does not support it in a production environment. This Preview Build will expire December 14th, 2018.
