Fix: Internet Explorer Wont Open

Internet Explorer has been the part of Windows operating system from its very beginning and he even stayed with us in the latest installment called Windows 10. The browser is not perfect but many other features depend on it to function properly.

However, sometimes this problem occurs when users are simply unable to open Internet Explorer at all and all clicking appears to be in vain. This might be quite problematic so we recommend you try and solve the problem immediately by following the instructions in this article. Good luck!

Solution 1: Uninstall or Disable Suspicious Programs

Sometimes the BSOD can be triggered by a program or an application which is not harmful or it was not created with that purpose but something simply went wrong and now it causes your computer to crash. It may not even be the application’s fault but yours actually because you didn’t update your PC or the app.

1. Check your computer for recently installed programs. Some of the programs which are known to cause the problem are Trusteer Rapport and NetLimiter. If you have installed these programs or some of the ones which may have triggered the error, it’s time to remove them.
2. If you are using Windows OS older than Windows 10, type “msconfig” in either the Search bar or the Run dialog box, and navigate to the “Startup” tab.
3. If you are using Windows 10, use the CTRL + SHIFT + ESC key combination in order to open Task Manager and navigate to the “Startup” tab.

4. Uncheck the program from starting and the Blue Screen of Death should seize to appear now.

If you don’t see the program in the startup windows, the best solution may simply be to uninstall it once and for all. Uninstalling the program doesn’t mean you can’t use it but it may be for the best to only use the latest version available.

Uninstalling Programs on Windows 10:

1. Click on the Start menu button located at the bottom left part of your desktop.
2. Select the Settings app by clicking on the gear icon above the Power button in the Start menu.

3. Select the Apps section in the app.
4. Select the suspicious program from the list of installed apps and then click on its Uninstall button.

5. Follow the instructions displayed on screen to complete the uninstall process.

Uninstalling on Previous Versions of Windows:

1. Click on the Start menu located at the bottom left part of your screen.
2. Select Control Panel from Start menu and switch the View by option to Category.
3. Select Uninstall a Program under the Programs section.

4. Select the suspicious program from the list of installed programs by clicking on it, and then click its Uninstall button.
5. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the uninstall wizard.

Solution 2: Replace the Internet Explorer Installation

This somewhat weird tweak managed to solve the problem for a user who tried almost every other method available. The solution consists of replacing the Internet Explorer installation directory with a copy snatched from a computer which doesn’t have this problem.

Note that you will need to have access to a computer which is running the same operating system as your computer or they might be problems afterwards.

1. Navigate to the C >> Programs Files >> Internet Explorer location on the affected computer and change the Internet Explorer folder’s name to Internet Explorer.old.

2. Turn on the computer where the issue is not present, navigate to the Program Files folder and copy the entire working Internet Explorer folder to a USB device.
3. Insert the USB device to the affected computer and copy the Internet Explorer folder to the C >> Program Files folder on the affected computer. Check to see if there is a iexplore.exe file inside and make a shortcut to the desktop in order to replace the old shortcut.
4. Check to see if you are able to open Internet Explorer now. If the problem still appears and you wish to continue using the old folder, simply delete the new one and delete the .old text from the old folder’s name.

Solution 3: Reset Internet Explorer Settings

This is a basic solution which can help you get to the solution most quickly. This method has indeed helped users, especially the ones who wanted to experiment with their Internet Explorer installation a lot. Make sure you try this out!

1. Open Internet Explorer by searching for it or by double-clicking its shortcut on the Desktop, select the Tools button at the top right part of the page, and then select Internet options.
2. If you can’t access Internet Options like this, open Control Panel by searching for it, change the view by option to Category and click on Network and Internet. Click on the Internet Options button which should be second in the new window and proceed with the solution.

3. Navigate to the Advanced tab, and then click on the Reset option. Select the Delete personal settings check box if you would like to remove browsing history, search providers, Accelerators, home pages, and InPrivate Filtering data. This is recommended if you really want to reset your browser but selecting this is optional for this scenario.
4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset and wait for Internet Explorer to finish applying default settings. Click on Close >> OK.
   
5. When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, click Close, and then click OK. Check to see if you are able to open it now without problems.

Solution 4: Disable and Re-enable Internet Explorer

This is yet another solution which is quite easy to follow yet it’s so helpful and it has saved countless users from having to reset their PCs in order to solve the problem. You will just need to disable Internet Explorer from the list of Windows features and re-enable it to check whether that will fix it for good.

1. On your keyboard, use the Windows Key + R key combination to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type in Control Panel and click OK in order to open it. You can also search for Control panel directly.

3. Click the Uninstall a Program option and click Turn Windows features on or off. Make sure you locate the Internet Explorer entry and make sure you untick the box next to it. If it was already unticked, that may as well be the cause of the problem.
4. Restart your computer after unticking this box and applying the changed and navigate back to the same screen, only this time you will have to enable or tick the box next to Internet Explorer. Restart your computer once more and check to see if you are able to open Internet Explorer normally now.x

Solution 5: Try Disabling Your Third-Party Antivirus

Sometimes the third-party antivirus tools get in the way and prevent Internet Explorer from launching properly. This can be tested by disabling the shields of your antivirus tools and checking if the problem still appears. If it does, you may be better off without that antivirus tool so consider finding a replacement.

The process of disabling antivirus shields is different from one antivirus to another and you should simply open its user interface and try to find that option. However, for most antivirus tools, you can simply right-click their icon in the taskbar to the right and choose the Disable shields option. This mostly occurs with AVG so keep an eye on it.

Solution 6: Re-register a DLL File

If a DLL file is missing from your Internet Explorer installation, it will be almost impossible to get it to work without it. Also, it’s a bit unfair that your PC won’t throw you an error message related to it. Try this solution out as it’s easy to follow and it yielded success to many Windows users.

1. Search for “Command Prompt”, right-click on it, and select the “Run as administrator” option. You can also use the Windows Key + R key combination and type in “cmd” in the Run dialog box.
   
2. Copy and paste the command below depending on the architecture of your operating system (32bit or 64bit).

regsvr32.exe “c:\program files\internet explorer\ieproxy.dll” —–32bit

regsvr32.exe “c:\program files x86\internet explorer\ieproxy.dll” —–64bit

3. Restart your computer by clicking Start Menu >> Power icon >> Restart and reopen try to open Internet Explorer normally.
