Huawei Mate 20 OLED display will reportedly be supplied by BOE

Huawei launched the Mate 10 last year with an LCD display but the Mate 10 Pro featured an OLED screen. The company is expected to remove that disparity later this year with the Huawei Mate 20. The Chinese manufacturer has reportedly opted for an OLED display for the Huawei Mate 20 which will be supplied by BOE, a display manufacturer based also based in China.

Supply chain scuttlebutt suggests that Chinese display manufacturer BOE has been tapped by Huawei to supply OLED panels for the Mate 20 Pro that will be launched in the coming months. It’s unclear what the supply volume will be but BOE has reportedly started production of the panels for the Huawei Mate 20 earlier this month.

BOE may supply panels for at least one million units of the Mate 20. That certainly won’t be enough for Huawei as the Mate 20 is a flagship device that’s going to sell in large numbers. Samsung Display is currently the biggest volume producer of mobile OLED panels so Huawei may have to source panels for the Mate 20 from Samsung as well.

BOE has been relatively late to the OLED manufacturing business. Its OLED production line started operations back in May last year with the first shipments being made in October 2017. This reported deal with Huawei suggests an improvement in the company’s technological competitiveness but it still has a long way to go before it can match the OLED production volumes of companies like Samsung Display.
