KDE Project’s Third Maintenance Update to Plasma 5.13 Counts 33 Changes

Having released the third maintenance update to the KDE Plasma 5.13 open source Linux desktop environment just two weeks after the 5.13.2 release, developers stays true to their tradition of fast release cycles. The latest KDE Plasma version further improves stability and security through various fixes and improvements across several components, including Plasma Desktop, Plasma Workspace, KWin, Plasma Discover and more. KDE’s own release announcement reads as follows:

Tuesday, 10 July 2018. Today KDE releases a Bugfix update to KDE Plasma 5, versioned 5.13.3. Plasma 5.13 was released in June with many feature refinements and new modules to complete the desktop experience. This release adds 2 week’s worth of new translations and fixes from KDE’s contributors. The bugfixes are typically small but important.

KDE Plasma 5.13.3 Changelog Highlights

A quick overview of key changes/fixes introduced with this release:

• Fix for QtCurve settings crash when using global menu
• KDE GTK Config: No longer displays duplicate icon themeicon theme entries
• Fix places runner to open search, timeline and devices properly
• Fixes for stability and usability in Plasma Discover
• Correct Folder View sizing and representation switch behavior

Next Release already scheduled for later this month

The fourth maintenance update release of KDE Plasma 5.13 is expected on July 31st, 2018, followed by the fifth and last maintenance update, KDE Plasma 5.13.5 this fall, effectively marking the end of life of the KDE Plasma 5.13 desktop environment. Given their well-planned and fast-paced release schedule, the lack of information on Wayland related progress is a letdown. KDE recognizes the need for Wayland support in Plasma due to constantly hitting the limitations of X. Currently, Wayland support in the KDE Plasma Workspaces remain in a tech-preview state, for they were developed to work with X11 and much functionality still relies on X11. Proper use of Wayland requires these bits to be rewritten. Although the move to a 100% Wayland solution seems to be taking ages, KDE is working hard toward achieving this goal and will likely turn out a pioneer in this endeavour.
