Kirin 980 could be a very smart chipset as it is rumoured to feature a second-gen NPU that can make 5 trillion calculations per watt
The Huawei Kirin 970 chipset is found in several smartphones, including the company’s first-ever triple-lens camera flagship, the P20 Pro. However, the progress in technology means that the Kirin 980 is going to be launched shortly. Huawei frequently makes an appearance at the IFA trade show, and the Chinese tech giant might be present there to properly launch the Kirin 980.
Reports state that the Kirin 980 will be made using 7nm FinFET process which is manufactured by TSMC. Excitingly, the same process is used by Apple A12’s chipset, which is going to be found in its 2018 iPhone series during September. Additional rumours say that this flagship chipset will be using the latest AI chip technology by Cambricorn, which will improve the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) making it more efficient and it will be able to commence up to 5 trillion calculations per watt.
The Kirin 980 will be available in an octa-core package, but it can run in a dual-core or quad-core state when the smartphone needs to conserve battery. The performance cores present in the Kirin 980 will belong to ARM’s Cortex-A77, though it should be noted that ARM has only launched Cortex-A76 at this stage, so the actual source could be incorrect here. As per unofficial reports, Kirin 980 will also come with Huawei’s own GPU from HiSilicon, the subsidiary responsible for designing the chipset. It will make the chipset 1.5 times faster than the Adreno 630 that is currently paired with Snapdragon 845 by Qualcomm, but the latter is also preparing the Snapdragon 855.
This chipset will be powering the Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro which will be unveiled to the public in the last quarter of 2018. Moreover, Kirin 980 should also be powering the next-generation Huawei P-series smartphones that will launch in 2019. In this way, Huawei is all set to make a mark in the tech industry with the arrival of its 7nm FinFET silicon.
