Microsoft pulls Office 2016 July 2018 KB4018385 patch

Microsoft recently released a patch for its Office 2016 suite as part of its July 2018 patches. Office 2016’s patch, KB4018385, has been pulled after it was discovered it developed a new bug that caused Office to crash.

In the original release, Microsoft noted KB4018385 as fixing the following issues:

When you insert a 2D chart (for example, a column, bar, scatter, line, area, or bubble chart) that contains many values into a worksheet, some gridlines at the bottom of the chart are not displayed. After you install this update, gridlines can be drawn normally in a chart with a wide range of data and logarithmic scale. When you work with a chart that contains filtered content in an Office 2016 application, the Office 2016 application may crash. This issue occurs if you install the update KB4018319.

Unfortunately, Microsoft’s patch to resolve these issues didn’t go quite as planned. The company pulled the patch as it caused files with charts embedded to crash (via BornCity). For those who did install the patch, the only workaround is to uninstall KB4018385.

This update is no longer available. It was removed because it causes Office 2016 to crash when you work with charts. There is currently no fix available for this issue. The workaround is to uninstall the KB 4018385 update.

In essence, a patch that was supposed to fix Office crashing then caused Office to crash, and now there’s no fix for all of the issues until Microsoft release a further patch in the future. So while uninstalling the latest patch is being recommended, you may still experience Office 2016 crashing under some circumstances, particularly while working with charts.
