Microsoft Teams takes aim at Slack with all-new free tier

Microsoft is taking business communication service Slack head-on with its all-new free tier for Microsoft Teams. Launched over 2 years ago, Microsoft Teams was Microsoft’s modern day business communication tool, showing a departure from the standard messaging apps we’re used to, such as Skype.

2 years on, Microsoft is finally getting its competitive edge on and is taking on its main competitor, Slack, which currently has a majority hold of the market, particularly with small and medium-sized businesses, mainly due to its freemium model.

Microsoft Teams’ new free tier allows up to 300 people to be a part of the team, offering up to 10GB storage for the team, as well as 2GB of personal storage for each person.

It is hoped that this free option will entice small and medium-sized businesses into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, with corporate vice president of Microsoft 365 Commercial, Ron Markezich, saying “This new offering provides a powerful introduction to Microsoft 365.” This shows that Microsoft is embracing the freemium model to get users into its ecosystem, a stark contrast to its previous model of enticing its currently paying customers of its Office products to join its business chat tool.

Despite the growth of tools such as Slack and Microsoft Teams, email still remains one of the top methods of communication within businesses, showing that there’s still a lot of growth to be had in the market.
