Middle-earth: Shadow of War free game update gets rid of microtransactions

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is the direct successor to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The game is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Developed by Monolith Productions, this open world action role playing game features a massive world filled with heroes and monsters. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released a free game update which primarily focused on game enhancements. We’ve highlighted the significant changes below.

Removal of the Market

A controversial mechanic in many games today, microtransactions are no longer a part of Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The in-game market has been removed and all Orcs recruited through Online Vendettas and Ranked Conquests will now be stored in the Garrison. In order to upgrade or customise your Orc army, players can utilise the in-game Mirian.

Changes to the Shadow Wars

The post campaign of the game, renamed to the Epilogue now features narration by Shelob, the Witch-king and Dark Talion. The whole campaign has been streamlined and now, when completed successfully, offers rewards in the form of powerful abilities. After completion, players can continue upgrading and defending their fortresses and army.

Character customisation and player skins

The follower level cap and enemy Captain level cap have been increased to 80 and 85 respectively. Defeating these captains and completing Nemesis Missions grant increased experience points allowing for faster level ups. Players can also spend Mirian to upgrade gear to current levels by completing the upgrade challenge, and these gear upgrades now allow players to re-roll abilities to fit their character.

Moreover, players can kit out their characters with two new skins, Celebrimbor and Dark Eltariel.

Nemesis Improvements

Apart from the increased experience rewards, Nemesis Missions have been changed to offer a greater gameplay experience. Legendary Orc encounters are more frequent now and there are more ways to obtain Legendary and regular Training Orders. Followers now have the ability to gift players, and will no longer steal kills if you toggle the new Saviour feature off.
