Sigma ART Lens Offer Excellent Optical Results Great Sharpness with Low Distortion

Four latest Sigma ART lens have been put to test by Marc Alhadeff. He reports that they have an excellent optical result and offer several other individual specs and features. The following were the stated specs and features of each Sigma ART lens:

Sigma 20mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art

This lens is for 1000 euros and has a good optical performance for a wide angle with fast aperture. It also has excellent centre sharpness and allows for quite a unique effect for a wider angle. The only drawback could be its visible field curvature which makes the lens hood non-removable and medium corners. Also, it weighs 1 kg which may not be an ideal weight. It is big and heavy to handle which makes it non-ideal for full day shooting. Its length is 155mm and has a 9-blade diaphragm. There is supposedly no protection against moisture and dust as well.

Sigma 24mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art

Another remarkable lens for 850 euros has supposedly ‘no equivalent’ due to its Sony FE mount. It also comes with a reasonable price and size with great sharpness and nice blur effects for close subjects. Its length is 115mm and a filter of 77mm. Its drawback is that it not weather sealed. Corners sharpness also is excellent for landscapes with the minimal focusing distance of 25 cm. It is highly recommended for those who wish for such a focal length.

Sigma 35mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art

Available for 800 euros, this lens version also has an excellent sharpness with a low CA and distortion and is better than Sony Distagon FE 35mm F1.4 Zeiss. However, Sony still has the edge in terms of color rendition and aperture ring for video and more significantly AF reliability. The not-so-reliable AF comes across as a big hurdle in Sigma and the users would have to stick to AFC instead. However, the available autofocus feature as the eye AF and face detection allows for a great picture result. As told by Alhadeff, “In AF-S at F1.4 with eye AF and face detection with wide area or with flexible spot small (no eye Af), I had severe issues with 1 photo tack sharp and second photo missed focus. I tried directly with my Sony Distagon FE 35mm F1.4 Zeiss with same settings and had no issue at all.”

It is hoped that Sigma will be able to fix this issue with better quality control and firmware update. However, it is a good option for those who do not have the budget to get Sony Distagon FE 35mm F1.4 Ziess which has a great sharpness.

Its length is 119mm and minimal focusing distance of 30cm.

Sigma 70mm F/2.8 DG Macro Art

Harboring the length of 131mm, this Macro lens is available for 550 euros and has similar features as the other three lenses with a reasonable price. It has a filter of 49mm and a minimal focusing distance of 26cm.

The only problem with this lens is that it is rather on the slower side and the lens may need to be corrected. If compared to Sony’s 90mm F2.8 macro lens, it is better in terms of sharpness but not in terms of ergonomics, however, Sony’s lens is almost double its price.
