Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver Officially Available for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Xylin, and Xubuntu

Ubuntu, the ever-popular Linux distro available in a wide variety of flavours, was just recently updated to 18.04.1 LTS (Long Term Support), codenamed “Bionic Beaver”. This is the first “point” release of 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver, and with it brings a ton of optimizations and fixes which many users have been anticipating.

Many Ubuntu users (especially business users) prefer to upgrade to LTS versions instead of every new Ubuntu version that becomes available, as LTS releases generally contain the most bug-fixes, and of course offer long term support. The last Ubuntu LTS release was Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus, so while we had Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak, 17.04 Zesty Zapus, and 17.10 Artful Aardvark, these are considered “regular” releases that only have a support time of 9 months, whereas LTS versions are supported for 5 years.

What this means is that currently, only Ubuntu 14 LTS, Ubuntu 16 LTS, and now Ubuntu 18 LTS are the only official Ubuntu versions which will receive regular patches and updates, as Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark reached its supports “end of life” on July 19th, 2018. The next non-LTS release will be Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic Cuttlefish, to be released on October 18th, 2018.

Ubuntu’s release statement for 18.04.1 LTS Bionic Beaver is as follows:

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS

(Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, and Cloud products, as well

as other flavours of Ubuntu with long-term support.

As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated

installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to

be downloaded after installation.  These include security updates and

corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining

stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Ubuntu Budgie 18.04.1 LTS, Kubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 18.04.1 LTS, Lubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 18.04.1 LTS, and Xubuntu 18.04.1 LTS are also now available. More details can be found in their individual

release notes:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseNotes#Official_flavours

Maintenance updates will be provided for 5 years for Ubuntu Desktop,

Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Cloud, Ubuntu Core, and Ubuntu Base.  All the
