AMD “Will Go All Out” On 7nm Process For Both CPUs and GPUs According To CTO Mark Papermaster

AMD has already released chips that are based on the 12nm process and is going to sample chips based on the 7nm process and these upcoming chips will be available starting this year. This is great for the company has Intel is having issues with the 10nm process and by the time Intel releases consumer chips, based on the new node, AMD will already have released chips that are based on the 7nm process.

We also know that on the graphics side of things, AMD is sticking to Vega but is moving it to the 7nm process as well. AMD has already announced that it is sampling these GPU and that they will be released in the second half of 2018. Mark Papermaster, chief technology officer of AMD, touched on the matter and the following is what he had to say in this regard:

We knew 7nm would be a big challenge, so we made the bet, we shifted our resources onto the new node. We didn’t just dip our toe in the water. We went all in.

Papermaster talked about how the 7nm AMD Vega GPUs were supposed to arrive in 2019, but that has been changed now and the GPUs will be coming out before the end of the year. He went on to mention the following:

I think we do have the opportunity to be positioned much stronger than we originally anticipated, but I have to say our original plan was to be positioned very strongly, so any delay from our competitor could simply strengthen the value that AMD brings to the market.

While the node is being changed, the architecture is the same and while you can expect to see some increases in clock speeds, at this point in time, I am not sure if we should expect massive gains in performance. AMD Vega did have a very shaky start and it will be interesting to see what kind of performance gains AMD can get out of the same architecture by moving it to the 7nm node.

The 7nm GPUs will be coming out before the end of the year so we will have to wait and see what they have to offer.
