Google Hires New AOSP Technical Lead on Heels of Android 9 Pie Announcement

Earlier this week Google announced the beginning of Android 9 Pie, but something many may have missed in the announcement made to the Android Building mailing list was the announcement (in the form of a hand-typed introduction) from Google’s new AOSP lead manager Jeff Bailey.

“I also wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as the new Tech Lead / Manager for AOSP. My name is Jeff Bailey, and I’ve been involved in the Open Source community for more than two decades. Since I joined the Android team a few months ago, I’ve been learning how we do things and getting an understanding of how we could work better with the community. I’d love to hear from you: @JeffBaileyAOSP on Twitter or jeffbailey+aosp@google.com. Be well!”

Jeff Bailey has a strong history in FOSS (free and open source software), having been involved in many projects such as being the co-founder of Savannah (where GNU software is developed and distributed), then worked 15 years on Debian, and has also been a core Ubuntu developer. He was also involved with the Google Open Source team and the open sourcing of Android around 2008.

Jeff is definitely going to have his hands full, as the role generally involves maintaining the AOSP repo, source code, releasing Google’s contributions to open source, and importing public contributions into Google’s releases – as well as being a point of communication for developers from all over the world.

In any case, Jeff Bailey definitely has the technical expertise, so we’re excited to see what lays in store for the AOSP project moving forward.
