Huawei Beats Apple in Becoming the Second-Largest Smartphone Manufacturer for Q2

Huawei has amassed a lot of success in recent years and this level of success has enabled it to become the third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. However, the Chinese technology giant could not seem to overtake both Apple and Samsung but only in the second time in history, Huawei has managed to overtake Apple and become the second-biggest phone brand in the world.

According to the latest figures reported by IDC, Apple only shipped 41.3 million iPhones in Q2 2018, but Huawei managed to outpace its competitor by selling a total of 54.2 million units, with Samsung coming in at number one with 71.5 million shipments. We are assuming that these smartphone shipments come under both the Huawei and the company’s Honor sub-brand, which churns out devices like the Honor 10. Such phones sport flagship specifications but are sold at very competitive prices, making them a favourite in a lot of markets.

Ryan Reith, Program Vice President with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers says that Huawei’s growth has been an impressive one, along with its capability to move into markets where the brand name was virtually unknown.

“The continued growth of Huawei is impressive, to say the least, as is its ability to move into markets where, until recently, the brand was largely unknown. It is worth noting that Apple moved into the top position each of the last two holiday quarters following its product refresh, so it’s likely we’ll see continued movement among the top ranked companies in 2018 and beyond.

For most markets, the ultra-high end ($700+) competition is largely some combination of Apple, Samsung, and Huawei, depending on the geography, and this is unlikely to change much in the short term. At the same time, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo are all slowly pushing their customer base upstream at a price tier slightly lower than the top three. This is an area they should all watch closely as the builds in this segment are getting increasingly more advanced.”

The company has been trying to penetrate the United States and although its smartphones are sold as unlocked models, no major carrier is officially selling them. In this manner, customers have to pay the full price instead of paying a monthly bill when they purchase a Samsung smartphone or an iPhone. Lots of customers might not appreciate paying the full price, and that might be the reason why Huawei’s phones are widely unpopular there.

Huawei is also preparing its Kirin 980 chipset, which is going to be the company’s first chipset to be manufactured on the 7nm FinFET technology and will be found in the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro.
