Intel 8th-Gen CPU Lineup Gets U and Y Series Core Processors For Faster Wifi, Increased Battery Life

While AMD is taking back a large portion of the market share from Intel, it doesn’t mean Intel would take it laying down. The company just announced its latest line of CPUs to round off the 8th-gen core chips.

At IFA 2018, the company unwrapped Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake chips for laptops. The new processors are aimed at the notebook market that is already dominated by Intel. Rarely we see an AMD chip in a laptop, it is mostly Intel Inside.

The company aims to continue its dominance in the laptop space but the product we are seeing isn’t a drastic improvement over its predecessor. Both Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake chips, U and Y series, are designed for improved battery life and faster Wi-Fi.

Intel will launch the U series trio – the i7-8565U, i5-8265U, and i3-8145U. Both the i7 an i5 variants come with quad-core and eight-thread configurations.  Meanwhile, the lower end i3 offers 2 cores and 4 threads.

i7 is clocked at 4.6GHz with a base clock of 1.8Ghz while i5 and i3 processors go to 3.9GHz with a 1.6Ghz and 2.1Ghz respectively.

The Y series chips, on the other hand, are dubbed as i7 8500Y, i5 8200Y and i3 8100Y. The i7 variant goes up to 4.2Ghz with a base clock of 1.5Ghz. The i5 has a base clock of 1.3Ghz and maxed out at 3.9Ghz. Last but not the least, we have the i3 with a 1.1 base and a max clock of 3.4Ghz.

According to Intel’s claims, the Whiskey Lake chips are 2x faster overall and provide 10.5x video transcoding speed, 1.8x improved web performance, with a 12x faster Wi-Fi. As far as battery life goes, Intel claims 16+ hours of life.

Intel is using modern display connectivity for 4K video streaming from Netflix and other platforms, fast erRAM, PCIe 3.0, Intel Optane, Thunderbolt 3,  integrated USB 31, Wireless-AC 160MHz.

You’ll also experience improved voice services courtesy of dedicated DSP used in the Intel U and Y Series Core Processors.

Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake chips will soon be used in a range of products.
