Intel Will Launch X599 Chipset For Its 28-core Processors

At Computex 2018 we saw the 28-core processor and what it had to offer. Intel claimed that the CPU was running at 5 GHz and that was indeed the case but what Intel failed to mention what that it was not a new CPU, not a new product, not a new architecture. It was an older CPU that had been overclocked. Furthermore, an industrial chiller was used in order to keep the temperature in check.  Now word has it that Intel is going to release a new X599 chipset for the 28 core monster.

The X599 chipset will come with the LGA 3647 socket. The socket is not new we have seen it before but the motherboards shown at Computex 2018, were most likely in the prototype phase and were not finished, while these are going to be industrial motherboards and won’t be fancy like the gaming motherboards that we have on the market, I am sure that motherboard makers are going to try and make something more polished even for the unusual platform that might not come out.

Making a 20 core CPU is not going to be the problem, AMD has a 32 core model that works just fine even with an air cooler. The problem is taking it to 5 GHz. I don’t think that can be achieved, at least not for the next few years. Provided that you are not using some kind of exotic cooling like LN2 or an industrial chiller that Intel used for its demo. Intel will need to develop some kind of super-efficient architecture in order to get a 28 core CPU to 5 GHz.

Right now it would be amazing to see Intel get 8 cores to 5 GHz. That should be a good enough start. I am sure that any chip that is going to come out on the 14nm process of even on the 10nm process is not going to be able to deliver that kind of performance. This means that this kind of chip won’t be coming out any time before 2020. It will be interesting to see what Intel is going to bring to the table and what the X599 chipset is going to offer.
