Seagate Gears Up for AI & Edge Computing-driven Smart Storage Solutions

As people shift gears towards in-cloud storage solutions, servers supporting these clouds demand high-capacity storage devices way beyond their years. Luckily for us, alongside this demanding transition, edge computing and artificial intelligence (AI) are making a great pair in contributing towards the development of smart data storage technologies. This comes as even better news for the developers at Seagate who are eager to take in this growth opportunity and plunge forward with the greatest and most advanced technology of the kind.

Edge computing is a method in which cloud systems and cloud-based applications are optimized for use by taking parts of the applications or cloud data away from the central nodes or core of the internet system towards the logical extremes or edges that are in closest contact with the end users. Edge computing has functioned till date to communicate with the cloud core by processing, filtering, and sending data. The promise of edge computing now is to push for smarter cloud storage solutions that utilize the edge philosophy and provide for stronger analytic machines, enhanced performance, and lower downtime and maintenance cost.

Seagate’s Vice President of Global Sales and Sales Operations, Banseng Teh, expressed excitement towards the massive growth opportunity handed to the firm through the demand for such storage solutions. He cited research that proposed figures that the edge computing market will hit USD $6.72 billion by 2022 and that 60% of global data will come from enterprises by 2025, giving this issue the utmost importance as its an increasingly critical concern for sake of the business of large corporations. According to Teh, 93% of enterprises already use cloud-based solutions for their work, going onto say that 80% of allocated IT systems budgets go solely towards funding these cloud platforms.

Although cloud computing remains an integral part of data storage and IoT, it will simply not be fast enough to process the influx of exponentially increasing data. To support this, functionality on the edge via edge computing will be needed, and to facilitate that, smart data storage technologies will need to be developed that support edge computing in actualizing its data synthesis and management. Edge computing could reduce data travel time between front and rear cloud systems in logistics management for many firms. The real-time smart processing benefits brought through edge computing will support the cloud and take it a step further to meet the needs of an ever-growing corporate industry.
