Steam to Drop Support for Windows XP and Vista in 2019

Steam is the most infamous and renowned gaming service provider for PC gamers on Windows. It comes as a surprise from Valve Corporation, the developers of the Steam platform, that they have now decided to drop support for two major Windows operating systems: Windows XP and Windows Vista. This end of support is due to take effect on the 1st of January, 2018.

The official statement from Valve Corporation explains this, stating that “starting on January 1 2019, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. This means that after that date the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.”

According to the developers of the platform, Steam uses an embedded version of Google Chrome which has discontinued support for older versions of the Windows operating system, namely Windows XP and Windows Vista. For this reason, Steam is no longer able to perform on these older operating systems.

In addition to this crucial dependence drawback, Steam has received numerous security updates as well as integration with Windows features which are a part of Windows 7 and onwards. These two reasons make it impossible for Steam to run on older Windows operating systems, making it necessary for all outdated users to update to Windows 7 or higher.

This is major news for PC video gamers and thankfully it comes with a good 6 months of notice. For the remainder of this year, Steam will function as it always has. Gamers will be able to download and play the latest releases of the year as always and will be able to utilize the platform for their PC gaming purchases. Some functionality, however, such as the Steam Chat is removed already without a 6 month notice, and it will only be available for updated operating systems running steam.
