YouTube Explore Tab Replaces “Trending” for a More Personalized Touch

YouTube started testing the new Explore tab on Android back in July. Explore feature was in its early testing stage so only 1 percent of users had access to it at the time. But things have changed and while a final rollout is not in sight, for now, Google has introduced YouTube Explore tab to more Android devices.

Explore feature is used in a number of apps that allow users to explore content in a more personalized manner. YouTube Explore tab will play a similar role when it replaces Trending.

Users will experience content that is most relevant to their own search behavior and viewing pattern. YouTube’s homepage has already done this to some extent, however, the Trending section was a different story.

Now, users will see a personalised Explore section that offers much better content compared to Homepage recommendations to get the most out of your viewing experience. This doesn’t mean Trending is being scrapped. In fact, Trending will exist as a subsection of the YouTube Explore Tab.

Broader Reach and Recommendations

YouTube’s algorithm has been criticised by many over the years, especially, by creators who put their heart and soul into creating content, only to be stuck inside the algorithm jungle.

To make matters worse, a user is stuck inside a bubble where only his subscriptions and related content is shown. With YouTube Explore Tab, users will be able to experience a broader range of content from content creators. A wide range of recommendations will pop-up which is beneficial for both the user and content creators.

Users seeing similar content was a common complaint so YouTube Explore Tab will broaden their horizon a bit. It is designed to help you be exposed to a wide range of topics, videos, podcasts, entertainment content, and much more from different channels that you do not come across otherwise. Still, everything is going to be relevant to you in one one way or another.

Very limited number of users currently have access to this feature on Android and iOS. However, if the tests go well, a final build will roll out in the coming months. You can play your role in improving the feature by sending your feedback to Google.
