Amazon EKS Platform Version 2 Adds Support for Horizontal Pod Autoscaling with Custom Metrics

Amazon just released Version 2 for Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (EKS). The recent update by Amazon adds support for horizontal pod auto scaling and the Kubernetes Metrics Server. Now it will be convenient for Amazon users to scale their Kubernetes workloads that are managed by Amazon EKS in response to custom metrics.

The platform versions of Amazon EKS refer to a particular Kubernetes patch version and also the Kubernetes API server configuration. New platform versions are added to show when Kubernetes patch versions have been released or when are changes made to the way EKS has configured the Kubernetes API server.

According to Amazon blog, Horizontal Pod Autoscaling was previously unsupported by Amazon EKS as a component that was dependent on API Aggregation like the Kubernetes Metrics Server could not start in case Client Certificate Authentication was not being used by the core Kubernetes API server. Kubernetes website states, “Horizontal Pod Autoscaler automatically scales the number of pods in a replication controller, deployment or replica set based on observed CPU utilization (or, with beta support, on some other, application-provided metrics).”

With the updated version webhook authentication is supported by Kubernetes Metrics Server which makes it possible to use HPA for Amazon EKS clusters. It also ensures that a consistent mechanism of authentication for the EKS clusters which maximize cluster security is in place. Users can now run production workloads in an easier way. It also enables API Aggregation for EKS Clusters.

Amazon blog further stated that all the EKS clusters that were created before today will be on PlatformVersion eks 1 and new clusters that have been created on 30th August will be on eks 2 which is the latest platform version. If the users wish to know if their EKS cluster has support for a Kubernetes feature or patch currently, they can look at the EKS platform version in their cluster details in the EKS console. More about this can be learnt from the Amazon EKS Documentation. Also, in order to get started with setting up their Horizontal Pod Autoscaler on an EKS cluster, the users can acquire details from here.
