Linux Mint Releases LMDE 3 ‘Cindy’ Cinnamon with Security and Bug Fixes

Linux Mint’s developer community has released the LMDE 3 “Cindy” Cinnamon on August 31, 2018, according to the Linux Mint Blog. It is an expansion project for Linux Mint on Debian basis.

LMDE, what does that mean?

So far, Linux Mint is basically built on Ubuntu as a base and binds its own Linux distribution with various window managers around it. The acronym LMDE stands for Linux Mint Debian Edition. It’s a Linux Mint development program, which is not built on Ubuntu but on Debian. The developers have expressed their opinions about the project goal in their blog:

Its main goal is for the Linux Mint team to see how viable our distribution would be and how much work would be necessary if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead.

In simple words, the team is not swapping from Ubuntu to Debian as the main source, but wants to know what work needs to be done to make that transition.

Linux Mint Debian Edition 3 “Cindy” Cinnamon Features

As of now there are no point releases in this LMDE distribution.  Other than bug fixes and security fixes, the Debian base packages stay the same as the previous one. But Mint and the desktop components are constantly being updated. When they are completed, the freshly advanced features will be incorporated directly into LMDE as they are deployed for the next Linux Mint release.

Here are the system requirements for LMDE 3 Cinnamon:

• 1GB RAM (2GB recommended for comfortable usage).
• 15GB hard drive space (20GB recommended).
• 1024 × 768 screen resolution (at lower resolution, you can move windows with the mouse while holding down the ALT key on the screen).

Here is a note on the 32- and 64-bit installation variants provided by the developers:

• 64-bit ISO, boots with BIOS or UEFI and recommended for all modern computers
• 32-bit ISO, boots only on BIOS systems.

The Linux developers recommend the 64-bit ISO, which runs on all modern computers from 2007 and till date. Furthermore, more information is available in the release notes; Guidelines for upgrading to LMDE 3 can be found here .
