Bixby 2.0 will support third party apps and improve AI, speech recognition and more on the Galaxy Note 9

The new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will be revealed in a launch event on August 9. Alongside the flagship phone from Samsung, it is rumored that a new version of Samsung’s voice assistant, Bixby 2.0 will be revealed.

The highlight feature of the new Bixby 2.0 will be third-party app support. The new Bixby will be able to implement external actions from different apps, like booking a cab or playing music. To support this feature, Samsung is also working on an SDK for developers to integrate their apps to Bixby.

Other notable improvements are faster speech recognition and response times, AI integration, language processing,  and noise resistance capabilities.

Samsung’s Plan for Bixby’s Future

Bixby was launched on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and has not been very successful in its initial attempts. Samsung’s assistant has been criticized in the past for being a mediocre assistant, not at the same level as its competition. Samsung’s decision to dedicate an unchangeable hardware button to launching Bixby was also not appreciated.

However, Samsung has not given up on its virtual assistant. The tech giant is looking to expand the assistant into an ecosystem for a variety of appliances. The aim is that Bixby becomes a home control ecosystem, working with Samsung smart TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines.

With the SDK release, Samsung hopes to rope in more developers to make their apps Bixby-compatible. Developers who support Bixby will then be able to have their apps on all these appliances.

Support for third-party apps should help Bixby gain some footing with competitors like Google Assistant, Alexa, and Siri. A hardware push for the assistant is also on its way with the Bixby speaker, similar to offerings by Google, Amazon, and Apple. The speaker is rumored to come with a rotating display and a camera, which might give it an edge over its competition.
