Fix: Windows 10 Rotation Lock Greyed Out

The rotation lock is available on tablets and various other laptops that are usually referred to as hybrid laptops. The rotation lock is kind of like your smartphone’s auto-rotate option. This rotation lock allows or prevents your screen to change orientations depending whether the lock is turned off or on. In some cases, you’ll notice that your rotation lock option is greyed out. This can cause a lot of problems since you won’t be able to change the state of the lock. Rebooting doesn’t help either and this happens all of a sudden.

The most likely reason for this issue is the lack of proper settings. This isn’t a software or hardware issue but rather a setting or usage issue. Most of the users who complained about this resolved the issue by changing the position of their machines. What most of the users don’t realize is that this option will stay locked as long as your machine is in the Laptop position. The rotation lock is clickable in other positions. Follow the steps in method 1 if you want a detailed solution.

Method 1: Turn to Portrait Mode or Tent Mode

This solution will seem very odd and simple but this is the one solution that has worked for the majority of the users. So, follow the steps given below

  1. If you have a 2-1 laptop then change it to portrait mode. This will make the rotation lock clickable again. Simply click the rotation lock to release the lock and your device should work in any configuration or direction afterwards
  2. If you have a 360 laptop then move your laptop to tent mode. Now click on the Action Center icon located at the bottom right corner of your screen. The Rotation lock should be clickable now. Click the Rotation Lock and it will allow the display to rotate.

The main thing to note here is that the Rotation Lock can only be changed when your device isn’t in the Laptop mode. So, you will have to change your device to either Tent mode or Stand mode in order to unlock the Rotation Lock.
