System76 Opens Manufacturing Facility to Build Linux Laptops

System76, the popular seller of powerful Linux-based computers that ship with the ultra-optimized Pop OS, recently released some photographs on Twitter teasing at something big in the making:

As it turns out, System76 is making the transition from a Linux-based computer seller, into a complete Linux-based computer manufacturer. The Twitter photos are from their new manufacturing facility. This means that System76 will no longer be slapping their logo on other company’s laptops and shipping them out, but making their own in-house laptops for consumers.

This puts System76 into a very interesting position of possibly becoming the “Apple of the Linux world”. System76’s “Customer Happiness Manager” Emma had this to say on their official blog about their massive undertaking:

“We are going to make computers in the USA. We can assemble them anywhere- but we need a factory to make them. So we found one. A BIG one.”

In fairness, System76 never really just slapped their name on other company’s hardware – they always made the effort to work closely with manufacturers to tweak firmware and make sure that its Linux-based systems would be optimized for the hardware.

But with their own manufacturing facility, System76 can now offer a top-notch Linux-based computer experience. The facility is located in USA (Denver, Colorado), which gives it a bit of “Made in USA” pride, but its interesting to speculate how this will affect final product prices, considering labour costs in the USA.

System76’s current laptop offerings fall between the $859 USD to as much as $2,799 USD, depending on the model, with their desktops falling into the same price ranges. So whether or not in-house manufacturing changes these prices for better or worse remains to be seen.

It’s difficult to say exactly how high System76’s goals are, as the manufacturing facility appears to be fairly massive – this isn’t a garage operation, for sure. To see more photos of System76’s new manufacturing facility, check out their official blog post.
