3DMark to Offer RTX Ray-Tracing Benchmarks Next Month

RTX Ray-Tracing benchmarks are very limited for the time being but soon that will change. According to UL Benchmarks is developing a completely new tool from the ground that offers RTX Ray-Tracing benchmarks.

UL won’t alter Time Spy as it would invalidate comparisons with previous benchmarks, hence, they are creating something new from the ground up.  This tool for 3DMark suite will utilize Microsoft DirectX Ray tracing (DXR).

Interestingly, benchmarks from the new 3DMark suit won’t allow comparisons with Time Spy and Fire Strike. It is an odd decision but in the light of everything we know about Ray-Tracing, it makes sense to separate from previous benchmarks tools.

The new tool will allow access to a tech demo showed back in March.  The demo was in 1080p running on DirectX 12. The performance we have seen from RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti indicates that we may not have benchmarks in 4K and 1440p. Full HD resolution seems to be the go-to resolution for benchmarking Nvidia Ray-Tracing.

In comparison, Nvidia RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti is doing great without Ray-tracing in terms of frame rates in many video games including Battlefield V, Metro Exodus.

Nvidia’s new tech is being used the in the latest line of 2000 cards and apart from full-scale GPUs, the tech will appear in notebooks later this year. Since mainline cards are having trouble maintaining 1080p/60FPS with Ray-Tracing enabled, it is hard to imagine notebooks being able to run Ray-Tracing at a stable frame rate.

This led to speculation that Nvidia may drop this feature from notebook varients of RTX chips. Many speculations but nothing concrete for the time being.

Nvidia RTX cards are now available to pre-order so you can pick one up if you can find one. The first batch is sold out and will be delivered to buyers next month.

Meanwhile, the second batch will be delivered to your doorsteps sometime in late November. Final dates are yet to arrive.
