The AMD Threadripper 2990WX is the top of the line CPU that AMD has to offer in the new generation of AMD Threadripper CPUs. The AMD Threadripper 2990WX comes with 32 cores and 64 threads, so you can imagine the kind of power that the chip is capable of. Keeping in mind the high core count, you do not get much in terms of clock speeds but an enthusiast was able to get the CPU to 5.4 GHz which is extremely high for a 32 core.

The AMD Threadripper 2990WX is the first 32 core CPU to hit 5.4 GHz and LN2 cooling was used in order to get to such a high frequency but even that is very impressive indeed. The hardware used to get the CPU to such a higher clock speed was the MSI X399 MEG Creation motherboard with custom LN2 BIOS and 16GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 3.4 GHz.

Running the AMD Threadripper 2990WX would take an enormous amount of power especially at such an abnormal clock speed and you would be right in thinking so. According to the reports the whole system was using 1200W. That is a lot of power but then again, the CPU is not supposed to be running at such a high frequency and it is unlikely that anyone that is going to buy this chip for everyday use is going to use LN2 cooling, so you should be fine.

The AMD Threadripper 2990WX is the top of the line model but you can also get cheaper CPUs in the same series. Both the 12 core and 16 core model cost less than $1000 and are aimed at enthusiasts. If you deal with rendering and need to cut down on processing time then this is something to look into. The 12 core model is the cheapest of the lot but it can still get plenty of stuff done and might be the perfect investment for you depending on your needs.

It will be interesting to see how Intel is going to take on the AMD Threadripper 2990WX keeping in mind that the Intel chips that are going to come out this year are going to be based on the 14nm process and will come with 24 cores at max.
