AMD Threadripper 2990WX Overclocked To 6 GHz

The AMD Threadripper 2990WX is the top of the line CPU in the second generation of AMD Ryzen Threadripper series and comes with 32 cores and 64 threads. That is very impressive keeping in mind the most cores that Intel is offering according to the roadmaps is 24. It is even more impressive that the AMD Threadripper 2990WX was overclocked to 6 GHz on all cores.

It is important to note that the AMD Threadripper 2990WX as overclocked using LN2 cooling which is an exotic cooling solution that is able to keep the cooler below sub-ambient temperature. It is also worth mentioning that this is not something the average person will be able to pull off on his own on a day to day basis. These numbers are for records only.

Using LN2 cooling on a daily basis would not be practical and it is also worth noting that at 5.4 GHz, it was reported that the system was using 1200W so you can imagine what kind of power the CPU will be putting at 6 GHz. While we have no confirmation regarding the matter, I think it is safe to say that the system is indeed using around 1400W.

AMD has been able to get back on its feet ever since it came back and now we have the second generation of Ryzen and Threadripper which are based on the 12nm process. Intel has been having issues with the 10nm process and is stuck with 14nm chips right now. This means that the upcoming chips will be based on the 14nm process. These include the chips that will come out later this year and the ones that will come out in the first half of 2019.

It is safe to say that AMD has been putting a lot of pressure on Intel and I think that the AMD Threadripper 2990WX is just another nail in the coffin. It will be interesting to see how Intel is going to respond to this monster of a CPU.

We did get an Intel 20 core CPU demo at Computex 2018 but it turned out that it was just a PR stunt. Nothing new there.
