AMD Threadripper 2990WX Sets World Record In Cinebench R15, Beating The Intel Core i9-7980XE

AMD Threadripper 2990WX is the top of the line CPU that comes with 32 cores and 64 threads, and guess what, it does not need an industrial chiller to keep the temperature in check. The CPU can run on air just fine and you should check out the Wraith Ripper cooler that and has developed with the help of Cooler Master for the AMD Threadripper 2nd generation CPUs.

Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Business Group, AMD, announced that the AMD Threadripper 2nd generation CPUs will be available starting 13th of August and people all over the world will be able to take advantage of the extra cores and threads that it has to offer. The following is what he had to say in this regard:

We created a new standard for the HEDT market when we first launched our first Ryzen Threadripper processor last year, providing computing power that was never before for the most demanding PC users in the world. We aim that second-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors can drive performance limits even further and continue to be at the forefront of innovation. As of August 13, creators, enthusiasts, and gamers everywhere will be able to feel the benefits of these products.

In a recent event, the top of the line AMD Threadripper 2990WX was overclocked to 5.1 GHz with liquid nitrogen cooling and it was able to break the Cinebench R15 record by scoring 7,618. It was able to beat the Intel Core i9-7980XE CPU which scored 5,828 points. This is very impressive indeed. Even though the AMD Threadripper 2990WX was using LN2 cooling it is impressive that a 32 core CPU was able to reach 5.1 GHz.

Of course, this does not mean that you will be able to get it to run at that frequency in everyday situations. LN2 cooling is exotic and is only used by enthusiasts for benchmarking and setting records, just like this one.

The AMD Threadripper 2990WX used the TR4 socket and should work fine with an existing motherboard. Other than that the CPU comes with 64 PCIe lanes and supports quad channel memory. If you need the extra lanes and the additional cores and threads then the AMD Threadripper 2990WX is something worth looking into.
