Fedora 29 FESCO Approval Highlights from This Week, and Fedora 30 Release Schedule Confirmed

The members of the Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee have not only recently approved the Fedora 30 release schedule proposal, they have just recently approved a handful of Fedora 29 features.

Fedora 29 won’t be shipping until the end of October, but the Fedora 30 release schedule was confirmed to be around April 30^th to May 7^th of next year – the developers are planning on a massive and lengthy rebuild to occur around the end of January, then change checkpoint completion deadline by middle of February, beta freeze in early March, beta release towards the end of March, and the final freeze around the middle of April.

As for Fedora 29, a handful of the recent FESCO approvals that go beyond the Fedora 30 release schedule will include:

• Fedora’s Xfce packaging will upgrade against Xfce 4.13, because the Xfce 4.12 packages have become fairly outdated, not to mention that Xfce 4.14 is not expected to be released until next year. On the bright side, Xfce 4.13 is fairly stable during its transition to the GTK3 tool-kit.
• The Dstat resource statistics toolk is being merged with the Performance Co-Pilot pcp-system-tools package.
• Liberation Fonts 2 have been approved for being added into Fedora.
• Packages that require the older Python 3.6 will be retired, as the latest Python 3.7 will ship with Fedora 29.
• Fedora 29 will receive monthly updates to cloud provider images.

The team has also diverted their decision to drop packages with consistently bad security ordeals to next week’s meeting, so we’ll have to wait and see exactly which packages will be sorted out.

If all goes well, Fedora 29 should definitely be released by the end of October 2018.
