Intel Next Generation CPUs Will Counter Specter And Meltdown Threats Without Performance Loss
Intel next generation CPUs are around the corner and while we do not have a confirmed release date from Intel right now there are reports that the chips will be announced in the upcoming weeks. Whatever the case may be, we know for sure that the next generation CPUs will be coming out before the end of the year.
Lisa Spelman, vice president of Intel Data Center Group and general manager of Xeon product line confirmed that the upcoming chips in the Xeon and Intel Core lineup will not be affected by the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities and they will do so without any loss in performance.
While Intel has worked with partners in order to fix the issue, we have noticed some loss in performance and there are some things that you just cannot fix by software. You need a hardware fix and that is what Intel next generation CPUs are going to come with. The following is what Spelman had to say in this regard:
Yes that is definitely the intent. So you see everything that we learned even ahead of the release of those and starting to work back in changes you would make inside the silicon. So we did software mitigations, then working back to hardware as soon as we could, and we were able to intercept timing for Cascade Lake in order to get it in. That will continue through.
She also confirmed that the team is at a stage in the design process of the upcoming Intel Cascade Lake series where the team is able to re-architecture parts of the core. The following is what she had to say in this regard:
Yes. Ronak (Singhal), one of our lead CPU architects, led that effort. We had to make choices in order to do that. To keep everything on the best case schedule we had to make a choice to intercept and stop tape-ins to make sure that we put this in. So we had to do the engineering work and then get it in. It was our belief that that is what we had to do, and the right decision for our customers in the ecosystem.
It will be interesting to see what kind of performance upgrades the Intel next generation CPUs will have to offer as compared to the current ones and the competition.
